We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at six on a Saturday, or when you’re standing in a new driveway in Leon Valley wondering if that custom carriage door will actually fit. Every one of us came up through the trade, not from a corporate training video. What holds us together is simple: we don’t leave until it’s done right, and we don’t make excuses. Carl Dutton started this in 1984, and he’s still the one who answers when things go sideways.

Carl Dutton, Owner
I started Mainspring in 1984, back when Leon Valley was mostly ranch-style homes with single steel doors and everybody knew their neighbor’s phone number. Still do this work because I haven’t found anything that beats fixing something broken and leaving a homeowner with a square deal. I’m factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, and Raynor, but the certification that matters to me is the one I can’t frame: showing up when we say we will. You’ll find me on jobs that went complicated, or on the phone at 2 a.m. when the answering machine would be easier. I live in the same house I raised my kids in, about twelve minutes from most of our Leon Valley calls. My truck’s got 287,000 miles and the original bench seat.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike joined us in 2011 after eight years running his own one-man shop on the northwest side. He came to us because he was tired of fighting suppliers alone and wanted a team that actually stocked parts. Mike’s the one who handles the calls other technicians flag as “weird” - torsion spring conversions on low-headroom track, custom radius jobs in the older Leon Valley neighborhoods off Huebner where the ceilings sit at seven feet six. He’s OSHA-certified and trains our apprentices on spring safety, which he treats with the gravity it deserves. Off the clock, Mike rebuilds vintage motorcycles and applies the same patience to a 1973 Honda CB350 that he does to a seized torsion tube.
Dolores V., Senior Installer
Dolores came over from commercial construction in 2016, and she brought with her an intolerance for doors that don’t hang plumb. She handles our new installations and full replacements across Leon Valley and up into the Hill Country, where the limestone substrate and seasonal shifting keeps things interesting. Dolores is particularly sharp on Clopay and Amarr door systems, and she’s the one who measures twice so we’re not cutting track in your driveway. She keeps a notebook of every custom job she’s done - door dimensions, headroom constraints, oddball framing - and references it when a similar call comes in. Her detail that matters: she won’t let a crew leave until she’s tested the door’s balance herself, by hand, every time.
James T., Service Coordinator
James is the live voice you get when you call (210) 972-1317 at midnight on a Sunday. He’s been with us since 2019, and before that he dispatched for a commercial HVAC outfit, so he actually knows how to route trucks in Leon Valley traffic instead of guessing. James keeps the board straight, makes sure our technicians aren’t double-booked across ZIP codes, and handles the parts inventory so Mike isn’t showing up to a spring job with the wrong wire size. He’s the one who calls you back with a tighter window when the morning job ran long. James grew up in the area, still bowls in a league at Bandera Bowl, and can tell you which Leon Valley neighborhoods have the HOA color restrictions without looking them up.
Elena M., Apprentice Technician
Elena started with us in 2023 after completing a mechanical trades program at the community college. She’s working her way through our K.E.Y.S. training - Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it - and she’s already cleared to handle cable replacements, roller swaps, and opener troubleshooting on her own. Mike shadows her on spring work until he’s satisfied she respects the stored energy in those systems. Elena asks better questions than most ten-year veterans, and she’s the one who noticed last winter that we were seeing a pattern of opener logic board failures in Leon Valley homes built during the 1989 construction boom - all those original Craftsman units hitting end-of-life at once. She lives near Evers Road and takes the bus when her truck’s in the shop, which happened twice last year and didn’t slow her down.
